Unplugged Coding in Primary Grades
Thursday February 13, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm MST
Unplugged coding aims to teach programming concepts through the use of games or activities that can be done offline using tangible objects, such as loose parts, paper and markers. Offline coding is a good way to engage younger students without the use of screened technology. As part of the new Alberta science curriculum, children can learn about "computer science" through basic concepts such as following directions, communicating a sequence of steps in order, and recognizing when actions do not correspond to instructions without using screens. Activities and ideas to use unplugged coding concepts with tangible activities that are ready to go in the classroom will be presented, and there will be time set aside to try out several of the unplugged activities as well. Participants will leave with some ideas for how to incorporate practical and engaging unplugged coding activities across a variety of subject areas.
