HALL B: Collaboration Session - Table 2 - Expanding Opportunites for French Immersion
Thursday February 13, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
Facilitator: Benoit Côté and Jilliane Smyl
Space: Collaboration Session - Table 2 Thursday, 10:30-11:30
Discussion:
I am pleased to host a table discussion aimed at exploring solutions to expand opportunities for French Immersion sessions at the ATA Convention. This session is open to all elementary and secondary teachers who teach French Immersion or French as a second language.
Key Questions:
  1. What major challenges do French Immersion or French as a second language teachers face when attending the ATA Convention, and how can we find possible solutions?
  2. What specific topics or training would have the most immediate impact on your teaching practice?
  3. How can we encourage more collaboration and sharing of best practices among French Immersion teachers at the ATA Convention?
  4. What types of professional development formats (workshops, round tables, hands-on sessions) would work best for your needs?

HALL B: Collaboration Session - Table 2 - Implementing the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) (Lucy Calkins)
Thursday February 13, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Facilitator: Ashika Chapman
Space: Collaboration Session - Table 2 Thursday, 1:00-2:00
Discussion:
Table Talk Facilitation: Implementing the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) (Lucy Calkins) can be more manageable when teachers leverage Writing Pathways, checklists, and assessments effectively. These tools help track student progress, guide instruction, and simplify reporting, making the process more efficient. By integrating them seamlessly, educators can create a student-centered learning environment that supports growth in reading and writing.
Leading questions that address real challenges teachers may face:
  1. How can teachers streamline the use of Writing Pathways to make assessment and goal setting more manageable?
  2. What are the best ways to integrate the TCRWP checklists and rubrics into daily instruction without adding to teacher workload?
  3. How can pre- and post-assessments be used to inform instruction, support struggling students, and guide reporting?
  4. What practical strategies can help teachers manage the reading and writing workshop structure while meeting curriculum requirements?
  5. How can teachers differentiate instruction within the workshop model to support students at varying skill levels?
  6. What are the biggest misconceptions about TCRWP implementation, and how can they be addressed?
  7. How can teachers use small group instruction and conferring effectively within the workshop model?
  8. What reporting strategies can help teachers align TCRWP data with school/district requirements?
  9. How can teachers foster student independence and accountability in reading and writing workshops?
  10. What common obstacles do teachers face when implementing TCRWP, and what solutions have worked in real classrooms?

HALL B: Collaboration Session - Table 2 - Outcome Based Assessment - Div 2
Friday February 14, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
Facilitator: Ashley Netik
Space: Collaboration Session - Table 2 Friday, 11:45 - 12:45
Discussion:
This would be a working group for div. 2 teachers focused on outcome based assessment. Specifically creating assessments and rubrics aligned with outcomes. I'd love to see some focus on the new science curriculum. In BRSD, I've been piloting outcome based assessment for 1.5 years and want to continue growing my practice and collaborating and sharing with other div. 2 teachers.
