Michael Landsberg - Mental Health - Off the Record
Thursday February 13, 2025 9:00am - 10:15am MST
What is mental illness?
What are depression and anxiety. Not what the textbooks tell doctors or what we find when we google them. The questions the way people need to hear answered are these: What does depression do to us? What does it feel like? How does it change us? At our core- what do we feel?
Example: Do I turn left or right when I'm starting a walk with my dog?

My history:
- Anxiety as a kid that I had no idea was actually "a thing."
- The effect of a traumatic event.
- Depression diagnosis. I had no clue. Of anything.
- Recovery. Relapse. Recovery. Relapse. Recovery. Relapse. Recovery. Relapse.
RECOVERY!
- Why I have a tattoo on my arm that reads 11.24.08.YUL.MH521.0400.
- How an interview I did on OTR (the show I hosted) change my life.
- The Tyson Williams story. Incredible.

Treatment:
Why sometimes you have to learn to love the thing you hate the least.

Michael Landsberg - Stigma around Mental Health
Thursday February 13, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
Stigma. Yes, it's still around, and I will prove it.
What does the stigma sound like?
Why does it exist?
What damage does it do?
How do we get rid of it?

How Can I Help?
Almost all of us care about someone who is going through a mental health battle. Almost all of us want to help someone. The challenge is how to actually be helpful.
I can offer tips and the biggest tip is to acknowledge "If I haven't been through it I can't understand it."

Suicide.
Why suicide's great ally is silence.

How Can Today's Teachers Take Full Advantage of The Artificial Intelligence Boom?
Thursday February 13, 2025 11:45am - 12:45pm MST
Teachers are no strangers to tech. Every time a new app, device, or social media platform emerges, teachers are on the front lines. They might not write the code that runs that software, but they see the impacts those machines have on students and society first-hand.
The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bigger than any change we've experienced before. (Many have said its impact will be bigger than that of the internet itself, and I don't think that's an exaggeration.) So what should teachers be doing in this moment of sweeping AI Advancement? How can they best position themselves to not only survive this tidal wave, but to harness its potential?
As a scientist and science journalist, I have an up-close and personal view of the changes sweeping the sciences, technology, engineering, and math. Every single week I see new data on the impact AI is having across disciplines. In this talk, I'll outline some of the most exciting developments around the world right now, especially in fields relating to classroom management, pedagogy, and mental health. Ultimately, my take-home message is one of optimism: I believe teachers already have the skills they need to thrive in this moment: curiosity, a willingness to learn, adaptability, and a sense of hope. I'll offer a few examples of ways that tools like ChatGPT can make teachers' lives easier right now, and encourage teachers to lean into this moment.
