Have you every wondered why words in English are spelled the way they are? English spelling is a very regular system when you examine words through an orthographic lens - a combination of etymology, morphology and phonology. This session will examine sight words that are often described as irregular- when in fact they are regular when you examine their meaning first. We will examine function and content words to better understand how to spell homophones. Are you using UFLI/ Secret Stories/ The Phonics Companion or any other phonics program in your classroom? Would you like to gain a beginning understanding of the “why” behind grapheme choice when teaching spelling? We will examine a few examples of how etymolgy and morpholgy account for grapheme use in words. Finally, we will examine some of the most frequent bases or roots in English to see possibilities for instruction in all subject areas. We will be accessing some online resources so bring a device (cellphones work for this!) . This session is not grade specific so if you are curious about why words are spelled the way they are this session is for you.
