Woodland Kids: Do kids know how to play on their own anymore? Do they ever go outside anymore? Do adults need to organize and control everything? This session is how to make a safe, fun, inclusive, outdoor and unstructured play area for students. Woodland Kids is a unique and popular recess activity where students are able to build structures with natural resources (branches, twigs, logs and bark) in the schoolyard. Woodland Kids is an area where students play freely; there are no structured activities. Students wind up making their own games, and their own social groups, with very interesting games and social structures emerging. Although there is always adult supervision at Woodland Kids, students are encouraged to resolve any conflicts on their own, in order to build their social skills and communication skills. Woodland Kids also has a council, called Woodland Kids Council (made up of Woodland Kids members) to troubleshoot any bigger issues. This session will take you through the process of setting up a Woodland Kids program, along with the benefits and challenges that come with it.
