Alberta has a new English language arts curriculum. I have had the opportunity to closely analyze how the new curriculum has been enacted by interviewing literacy leads and teacher educators about their experiences with—and perspectives on— said curriculum. We have also closely coded the curriculum itself. Aside from some of the obvious issues that might arise from a curriculum that was developed quickly without a lot of community involvement, there are as many glaring omissions as there are didact examples. Literacy is an essential component of any elementary school classroom. How literacy is shaped and understood by the policies and procedures that govern our classrooms can deeply impact the professional development of teachers and in turn the activities that they take up with their students. Join us to understand what literacy experts and practitioners have to say about the new curriculum. We will also place this curriculum within the context of the so-called ‘reading wars’ and discuss the many false claims happening throughout the media in relation to the Science of Reading.
