Teachers are no strangers to tech. Every time a new app, device, or social media platform emerges, teachers are on the front lines. They might not write the code that runs that software, but they see the impacts those machines have on students and society first-hand.
The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bigger than any change we've experienced before. (Many have said its impact will be bigger than that of the internet itself, and I don't think that's an exaggeration.) So what should teachers be doing in this moment of sweeping AI Advancement? How can they best position themselves to not only survive this tidal wave, but to harness its potential?
As a scientist and science journalist, I have an up-close and personal view of the changes sweeping the sciences, technology, engineering, and math. Every single week I see new data on the impact AI is having across disciplines. In this talk, I'll outline some of the most exciting developments around the world right now, especially in fields relating to classroom management, pedagogy, and mental health. Ultimately, my take-home message is one of optimism: I believe teachers already have the skills they need to thrive in this moment: curiosity, a willingness to learn, adaptability, and a sense of hope. I'll offer a few examples of ways that tools like ChatGPT can make teachers' lives easier right now, and encourage teachers to lean into this moment.
