How are we conserving our natural environments? You will participate in a variety of hands-on experiential activities that reinforce the importance of plants in ecosystems and how to support conservation. What are the purposes of plant parts? How are plants responding and adapting to their surroundings and ecosystems? What can we, as scientists, do to ensure their survival? Students will record their findings in a field journal, create an ecosystem display, and continue their field research after the program with their very own seedlings that they will pot to take home.

Participants will investigate biomes around the world at the Muttart Conservatory, and make observations on how ecosystems adapt and the factors used in sustainable ecosystems. Participants will apply this with hands-on experiments looking at the soil, water, and cellular structures of plants and the factors which affect them. They will then be asked to take on the role of governing bodies to determine how they would conserve our endangered grasslands in a changing landscape and changing climate.

In honour of their 100th anniversaries, the exhibition Knowledge Made Concrete draws from the AGA’s Permanent Collection, showcasing works by AUArts alumni and faculty. Ekow Nimako: Building Black Civilizations - Journey of 2,000 Ships features an Afrofuturistic reimagining of ancient African kingdoms. Using LEGO® bricks as his medium, Nimako explores the mysterious 14th century sea voyage of the predecessor of Mansa Musa, ruler of the Mali Empire. Probably, Plausibly, Possibly is the newest iteration of our Children’s Gallery seeking to imagine what the AGA will be another 100 years into the future.

Escape Boredom: Engaging students through the use of Escape Rooms

Escape rooms have become a popular source of entertainment as well as a vehicle for team building and collaboration; additionally they have begun to catch the eyes of educators as a potential tool for collaborative learning activities in classrooms. Escape room players solve puzzles and decipher codes in order to solve their way out of the room. In this session, teachers will walk through example escape room puzzles, using locks, codes keys and riddles that can be adapted for their own classroom activity. This session will also cover how gamification can increase engagement and inclusion as well as how to source items to set up your escape room, sample puzzles and potential curriculum connections.  No escape room experience required.

This session invites teachers to explore agriculture as a way to engage students’ innate sense of awe and wonder, which are powerful experiences that can enrich curriculum connections, deepen engagement, and harness children’s natural curiosity. Based on research findings from a school using agriculture as a lens to facilitate elementary curriculum, teachers will learn how agriculture-based teaching can tap into children’s natural curiosity, sense of wonder, and desire to discover, while expanding their experiences with nature. Teachers will leave with practical examples for integrating agriculture- and nature-based lessons they can build on to make learning meaningful, awe-full, and wonder-full, not only for students but also for teachers. Tried and true lessons will be showcased to encourage teachers to map agriculture onto Alberta curriculum in discipline-specific or cross-curricular ways. This session is meant to spark ideas for modest or elaborate projects for teachers regardless of school context. Why is it important to prioritize our financial well-being? Being financially prepared is essential because it's not just about money; it's a fundamental aspect of overall wellness. Neglecting financial health can lead to stress and affect mental well-being, making it harder to navigate life's challenges.

For educators, who often prioritize the needs of others over their own, focusing on personal wellness, including financial wellness, is imperative. Studies show that 40% of financially unstable Canadians experience stress related to their finances. This stress permeates their work life, with 88% reporting frequent worries and 49% admitting it affects their job performance.

But what if there were simple tools that could alleviate this stress? This session aims to provide such tools, offering practical steps that can be implemented easily.

In this session, you will learn how to identify any financial gaps that you may have, how to prepare for the unknown (financial emergencies and unexpected costs), and how to plan for your expected financial needs (home down payment, kids' post-secondary tuition, additional retirement funds). We will explore investment options, look at market dynamics, and using our core strategies we will set you up to make informed financial decisions.

Woodland Kids: Do kids know how to play on their own anymore? Do they ever go outside anymore? Do adults need to organize and control everything?
This session is how to make a safe, fun, inclusive, outdoor and unstructured play area for students.
Woodland Kids is a unique and popular recess activity where students are able to build structures with natural resources (branches, twigs, logs and bark) in the schoolyard. Woodland Kids is an area where students play freely; there are no structured activities. Students wind up making their own games, and their own social groups, with very interesting games and social structures emerging. Although there is always adult supervision at Woodland Kids, students are encouraged to resolve any conflicts on their own, in order to build their social skills and communication skills. Woodland Kids also has a council, called Woodland Kids Council (made up of Woodland Kids members) to troubleshoot any bigger issues. This session will take you through the process of setting up a Woodland Kids program, along with the benefits and challenges that come with it.
